Resumo:To observe and examine the blockbuster contemporary art exhibition phenomenon in Portugal in what it concerns its specific dynamics of a once in a lifetime cultural event is the main purpose of this thesis. We aimed to verify if the commonly linked ideas to this particular nature of exhibition would apply to the national field and in what terms those were implanted and structured. In order to do so, we proceeded to the elaboration of detailed tables of exhibitions held by two selected Portuguese institutions, Centro Cultural de Belém and Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Serralves, to convey the reading in comparison of the attendance figures and of the patterns of the shows. Those tables were built based on literature on the subject, so that theory could be face to face with empirical data. Few are the Portuguese studies regarding this field of interest, so we considered the interviews with professionals of the most relevance. Those are a third way of facing that issue and run the whole thesis as unifying layer. To sum up, the three chapters of this thesis are organized in extreme connection and the conclusions drawn are the result of the global reading of the three axes. The numeric view is only one of the possibilities to regard this phenomenon: the most used and perhaps the most irrelevant. We therefore need to focus on internal configuration matters of its dynamics to understand the blockbuster exhibition phenomenon
