Resumo:Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-specific disease that remains as a leading cause of maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity. The consideration of this disorder as more than merely hypertension in pregnancy has led to an extensive investigation about the pathophisiology of preeclampsia. The multifactorial pathogenesis of this pregnancy syndrome has not been fully elucidated but it is established that this disorder has two distinct steps: the first one that consists in impaired invasion of uterine spiral arteries by extravilous cytotrophoblasts followed by a second stage of endothelial maternal disease. The link between the two stages is yet to be known. Here is described some of the recent information about the diagnostic criteria of the pregnancy disorder, the participants in its pathophysiology , its risk factors and also about its prediction and prophilaxy strategies.
