Detalhes bibliográficos
Resumo:The keratoconus is characterized by a progressive corneal ectasia, causing irregular astigmatism and consequent deterioration of visual acuity. Causes structural changes in the biomechanics of the cornea, particularly in its strength and elasticity, giving it a more conical shape. This is one multifactorial, multigene disease, with complex inheritance patterns, in which environmental factors possibly play a decisive role in its pathogenesis. Being a chronic disease that usually covers an age range between 20 and 30 years, it is important to understand and evaluate the impact of keratoconus on quality of life of patients, not only with regard to the limiting factors of the disease, but also identifying personality disorders experienced by them. Looking deeper into some recent comparative studies we have noticed that patients appear to be more pessimistic, shy and insecure people that emmetropic. The perception of the disease decisively influences the daily life of patients, hence the importance assumed by the communication and relationship between doctor and patient. As health professionals we should always seek to provide a better quality of life for the patient, while we encourage their autonomy, self-esteem and social inclusion.
