Contribuição para uma estratégia de conservação para o camaleão-comum, Chamaleo chamaleon (Linnaeus, 1758), no sul de Portugal
| Resumo: | As is widely known, the distribution of the common chameleon in Portugal is I imited to the AIgarve coast. Its distribution coincides with areas of high tourist pressure and strong urban growth. The combination of these characteristics with the fact that the species has a reduced ability to spread helps making the loss and fragmentation of habitat the main threat factores to the species. Therefore, there is a need to increase knowledge in order to know the conservation status of the species and outline truly effective conservation measures. This research project arises in a tentative way to contribute to an appropriate management and conservation of the population of the common chameleon in Portugal. In order to accomplish this task, the range of the species was identified. This identification was performed at a high spatial resolution, in order to allow outline actions in terms of conservation planning units of limited size and biological significance. The identified distribution area of Chamaeleo ehamaeleon in Portugal proved to be substantially reduced and fragmented. This procedure also enabled us to identify habitat types that have a greater fitness for the survival of the species. Priority areas for implementation of conservation actions were also identified, with a view to maximize the effectiveness of those actions in light of economic constraints associated with these interventions. The ruCN B criterion was implemented to the common chameleon in Portugal, revealing that the species current1y justifies a threatened conservation status in the country. |
