Knowledge representation in contested archives: a stemmatic approach

Ver documento

Detalhes bibliográficos
Resumo:This study employs Stemmatics, a genealogical approach, to assess how archives are depicted in Information Access Instruments (IAIs) during custody disputes. The primary aim is to understand the portrayal of contested archives within IAIs and how this mirrors custody procedures and case intricacies. The research analyses the IAI of the Convento de Nossa Senhora da Encarnação do Funchal (CNSEF) collection, currently under the custody of two Portuguese archival institutions. Using Stemmatics, the study identifies evolutionary trends in IAIs, exposing how the depiction of archival information is influenced by mechanisms that add, modify, or remove descriptive elements such as the artifact titles. The findings reveal that custodians wield significant influence over how archives are represented, often prioritizing their own IAI and omitting details concerning the opposing party's holdings. Additionally, political, and institutional challenges hinder the reunification of the CNSEF collection. This study concludes that the Stemmatic approach is relevant for analyzing archive representation in custody disputes, uncovering metaphors and analogies within IAIs. Given the absence of alternative methodologies, Stemmatics holds considerable epistemological potential in the field of Knowledge Organization, particularly as a genealogical classification method.
