Resumo:The second half of the 20th century was marked by the great increase of assisted reproductive techniques. In fact, worldwide, more than 1 % of births is the result of treatments with these techniques. It is a given fact that newborns with congenital anomalies constitute a small percentage of all births, however it is nor clear whether this proportion is whether or not increased when referring to outcomes of assisted reproductive techniques, including In Vitro Fertilization and Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection. The aim of this review is to systematize the existing literature from multiple population based studies, meta-analyzes and systematic reviews. It was found that, in fact, there is an increased risk of birth defects when compared to spontaneous pregnancies, with odds ratio going from 1.29 to 1.67. When a categorization of the risk by organ system was made, it was found that the nervous system is the most affected system although all systems suffer increased risk. Concluding, couples who seek these types of treatments should be informed of the associated increased risk of congenital anomalies. Also, there is a role for closer obstetric surveillance of women who conceive with assisted human reproduction.
