Summary:The study of the relationship between form and content remains fundamental for the development of visual thinking in the arts. The concepts of plastic idea and formal content, derived from this study, have a very precise meaning for artists, but they remain obscure for the great most of the observers, who usually associate the content of a work only with thetheme and the representation. The analysis of Rembrandt's engraving entitled "The Three Crosses" offers an excellent study of this relation, for through it we can clearly and objectively indicate how the plastic and abstract content of works of art, that is, the contents that emanate in their own way, dialogue with the semantic or narrative contents, these linked to the theme of works and their meanings
