Detalhes bibliográficos
Resumo:Mental health issues are pervasive in today’s fast-paced world, with problems of stress and anxiety being common and having negative consequences on the daily lives of both individuals and society as a whole. Immersive digital experiences have shown great potential in promoting emotional balance, making them a promising tool in this area, and Awe, a powerful emotion elicited by inspiring stimuli, has been proven to have unique benefits for reducing stress and improving mental well-being as well. In this project a web application titled AWEsome Portal was developed, aiming to evoke feelings of Awe through immersive video content, with the goal of making users connect with nature and experience inspiring moments of wonder. Those curated contents are accessible in a easy and user-friendly way, allowing the average person to connect with these experiences with devices they already own and without the need for any specialized hardware or being particularly technogically savvy. By leveraging the benefits of daily exposure to Awe, this application aims to improve user’s mental well-being on both a short and medium to long term way. The AWEsome Portal runs on multiple platforms (smartphone, tablet, PC) and features a userfriendly, responsive and immersive interface easily navigable by either mouse or touchscreen. Users can explore a range of natural environments, such as forests, oceans and space, with each experience designed to evoke Awe based on previous psychological research and two of them having been validated in a user study that proved their effectiveness. An initial user evaluation of the AWEsome Portal demonstrated its potential, garnering positive feedback from users both regarding its ease of use and the content it presents, along with some suggestions for improvements. The small issues faced along its development were documented and a solution found, and ideas for future work and improvement are presented should the project be developed further.
