A Escola António Arroio e o ensino artístico: artistas emergentes no início dos anos quarenta

Resumo:This dissertation aims to analyze the impact of the artistic education at the Escola Industrial António Arroio (Applied Arts) during its early years, from 1935 to 1941, and to understand how this educational model contributed to the holistic formation of its students, preparing them for the artistic rupture that characterized the transition to contemporary art in Portugal. The research focused on analyzing the educational and sociocultural context of the time, as well as the journey of the artists trained at the school, who would become important figures in Neo-Realism and Surrealism in Portugal. It was concluded that Escola António Arroio played an essential role in the formation of its students, providing an education that combined technical training, artistic practice, and an inclusive and innovative environment. Factors such as the mixed nature of the school, the qualifications of the teachers, the humanistic leadership of the director, and the atmosphere of constant confrontation with the authoritarian Estado Novo regime contributed to the development of a generation of artists with a critical and creative vision. These elements were decisive in enabling these young artists to challenge established norms and become protagonists of the aesthetic and cultural renewal that marked Portuguese art in the following decades
