Business intelligence : an overview of the process and its applications to healthcare
| Resumo: | Business Intelligence is a technology-driven process for analyzing data and presenting information to help companies achieve a set goal. In other words, this process allows companies to make better data-based decisions. This process relies on the collection of data through ETL tools and its storage in data warehouses, data analysis through online analytical processing and data mining, that transforms data into useful information. This information needs then to be accessible to users through visualization tools, such as dashboards, reports and scorecards, allowing monitoring of performance metrics in order to enable managers to make process adjustments to achieve a specific goal or even a global strategy. Business Intelligence tools have arrived to every industry, including the Healthcare Industry. On one hand, as we know the Portuguese Healthcare system is on a tight budget, as the financial crisis as set in. With the large amounts of data generated by patients and healthcare facilities, business intelligence solutions can be presented to healthcare organizations in order to support their management, reduce costs and better allocate resources. On the other hand, business intelligence solutions can help healthcare providers achieve better diagnosis and treatments, through integrated data analysis across the multiple healthcare organizations. |
