Visual empowerment through synthetic media: the E-ARTi Project in art and media education

Resumo:The E-ARTi Project, a postdoctoral research initiative funded by Portugal's Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), explores the use of synthetic media, such as deepfakes and voice cloning, to ignite critical and creative engagement among young people. Hosted by the University of Lisbon’s Center for Research and Studies in Fine Arts (CIEBA), E-ARTi challenges common perceptions of synthetic media (so often associated with identity theft and misinformation), by recasting it as a powerful tool to stimulate critical thinking and artistic exploration. The project is centred on secondary school teachers and students aged 12 to 18, employing an art-based methodology that intertwines internet ethnography, artistic research, and practical AI tools to enhance cultural literacy. E-ARTi's objective is to develop culturally responsive curricula that empower students to engage in visual activism through AI-generated media. This paper introduces the E-ARTi Project and discusses peer feedback in its methodology, which incorporates ethical considerations aligned with the European Commission's guidelines on AI in education in agreement within European and Portuguese media education frameworks.
