Painting the picture : an acute ear for dialogue

Resumo:This investigation examines the functions of dialogue as a tool highlighting its crucial role in advancing the storyline, revealing character motivations and offering social commentary. By exploring the complexities associated with dialogue this research delves into its nuanced ability to provide insights into human emotions and cultural norms. Philip Roth's body of work - with emphasis in his influential work "Portnoys Complaint “ - serves as an example to illustrate these points. To underscore the timeless and universal nature of dialogue this study also incorporates a perspective through the analysis of an author novel called "Flor que se Cheire”, a novel written by this research author that was produce with Roth’s dialogue techniques in mind This addition enriches the narrative by presenting a lens through which dialogue continues to shape landscapes. As the study progresses it becomes clear that dialogue is not a technique but a dynamic force that surpasses time and cultural boundaries. The study concludes by emphasising the role of dialogue, in both discussions and wider literary practices.
