Os painéis científicos ou wandtafeln : análise do acervo do Museu de História Natural e da Ciência de Lisboa (MUHNAC)
| Resumo: | This work discusses wall charts as an specific media derived from scientific illustration used for teaching and communicating science to general public, that achieved its major success during the 19th century. And it is particularly focused on the MUHNAC's (Natural History and Sciences Museum of Lisboa) collection, which is mainly composed by pieces from that period of time. It also enlightens briefly, scientific illustration evolution throughout history. An explanatory introduction to Scientific Illustration is made (some changes in scientific illustration are already depicted here), followed up by a historical summary of science education through different materials and mainly through wall charts. Afterwards, wall charts are discussed deeper to provide more information on their history, main characterics, purposes etc. Next chapter introduces MUHNAC's wall chart collection. Since it is necessary to contextualize it, the museum and other collections are discussed first. Then, a few pieces of the collection are described. The provided information is based on the original wall charts own data and also on copies that can be found in different institutions all over the world. The empirical section shows how to recreate one of the drawings from MUHNAC's wall chart collection, according to contemporary scientific knowledge and current scientific illustration requirements to analize each phase of the process; emphasize the old illustration mistakes; and highlight adequate education and training as the best way to accomplish scientific illustration requirements |
