Reconstituting art in Life Artist Residency Chronotopia
| Resumo: | This article presents a typology of artist residencies. Residencies attract artists by evoking time and space for creation and inspiration in an ideal or utopian way. Time and space are interdependent and residencies generate a specific chronotopy (Bakthin, 1978) with this interdepency. This appeals to the imagination of artists as an ideal time-space for creation, for which the neologism “chronotopia” is introduced. By using this concept four ideal-types are distinguished. (1) The My Chronotopia which evokes the time and space for introspection; (2) the Rhizome Chronotopia in which the career of the artist is central; (3) the Alter Chronotopia where time and space serve to get to know the other; and finally (4) the Embedded Chronotopia where the integration of art into society and ordinary life forms the ambition. |
