Vascular prognosis of focal and mixed transient neurological attacks
| Resumo: | Introduction: Transient Neurological Attacks (TNAs) are sudden neurological symptoms completely resolving within 24 hours. We aimed to assess the vascular prognosis of focal and mixed TNAs during the first year of follow-up. Methods: Observational study in a Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) clinic included consecutive patients with focal or mixed TNAs, for seven years. Primary outcome was a composite of TIA, stroke, myocardial infarction and vascular death, and secondary outcomes were these events separately, in the first year of follow-up. Variables were compared between TNA subtypes using Pearson Chi-Square Tests. Event rates were compared between TNA subtypes using Kaplan Meier survival curves. Results: 510 patients were enrolled, 358 (70.2%) focal and 152 (29.8%) mixed TNAs. The 1-year event rate for the primary outcome was similar in focal and mixed TNAs (14.0% vs 14.4%, p=0.884). There were no significantly differences in the secondary outcomes. Conclusions: Nonfocal symptoms accompanying focal symptoms afflicted one third of patients. Vascular prognosis of focal and mixed TNAs was similar during the first year of follow-up. |
