A era dos falsos profetas

Resumo:This theoretical and practical dissertation, titled A Era dos Falsos Profetas (The Era of False Prophets), is centered around the following proposition: is it possible to engender a symbolic theory concerning artistic work of appropriation? It aims to define the work of art as a symbolic system composed of mutually dependent elements, alike the systems of language and social action, underlining its political nature. It also intends on stating that everyday life is a complex realm, whose elements can be displaced in order to unveil new and unexpected qualities. To address these propositions, ideas that originate in the fields of Linguistics and Structural Anthropology, as well as of Claude Lévi-Strauss’ symbolic notion of knowledge and concept of ‘floating signifier’ are referred. The works of Herberto Helder and Chris Marker are cited as conclusive examples of the abovementioned concepts. The origins of the appropriated materials used in the current project are then located within the realm of everyday life. The concept of the ‘uncanny’, coined by Sigmund Freud, concerning the feeling of strangeness that emerges from what is familiar, is clarified. Apropos of this idea, the cinematic works of Gus Van Sant and Todd Haynes are mentioned. The displacement and subversion games of William Burroughs are indicated as paradigmatic references for the current practical project. The resulting work of art that integrates this dissertation is a box that contains one VHS tape with eight videos and one 16 mm film transferred to video, one publication, which presents an anthology of texts, and another publication solely composed of images
