Missionary and Subsequent Traditions in Africa
| Resumo: | The present chapter presents an overview of selected dictionaries of African languages underlining the role of the missionaries, both Catholic and Protestant, and some native speakers since the beginning of European colonization. It is not a comprehensive analysis of all African languages nor all dictionaries of each language. The main objective is to complement the research of other scholars and to point out the pioneering and lesser-known milestones of African lexicographic works. To better identify each language, they are divided into three main zones: Western Central, Eastern, and Southern Africa. Nevertheless, some of the languages could be described as belonging to another zone, mainly between East and South, because their languages are spoken in various countries belonging to more than one zone. |
